New E2 Visa Guidelines (December 01, 2007)

E-2s to need medical, criminal checks
The application process for an E-2 teaching visa will be tightened up in December.
According to a Ministry of Justice press release, foreigners who apply for teaching visas will have to submit a criminal background check and a medical check, and must undergo an interview at the closest Korean consulate to their home town. Visa runs to Japan will also be scrapped. Teachers must now receive and renew visas in their home country.
The tightened controls come in the wake of news that a pedophile suspect worked in Korea on several occasions, along with the avalanche of fake-diploma scandals throughout Korean society. The suspect has not yet been convicted, and there is no public link to any offences in Korea.
We have been drawing up the new regulations for some time but the recent case of Christopher Paul Neil could be said to have brought the issue to the surface, said the official. Drug use and other criminal activities carried out by foreign English teachers have been a social issue for some time, and have built up to dangerous levels in recent years. That is why we are implementing changes now.
The new regulations will only affect foreigners holding E-2 visas, and those seeking an E-2 visa. We do not plan to strengthen regulations concerning all foreign nationals in Korea, as that would be unnecessary, the ministry official added. We are focusing on teachers because they come in close contact with children, and we have a duty to protect children from unnecessary dangers.
There are concerns about the logistics of the consulate interview part of the plan. Its about time they had criminal record checks, and the health check is a good idea, says Tricia Elliot, a teacher at a private institute in Seoul. But this interview at the consulate is a bit overboard because it cuts out a lot of people from smaller areas of large countries.
A lot of the Canadians who work as teachers are from the East coast, and the nearest consulate is in Montreal, she explained. Thats really far away, and impossible for most people to get to on short notice for an interview that doesnt guarantee a job. English teachers have had trouble finding information about the changes. Many have been told by their local immigration branch that there were no changes, or that the office was unaware of them. This is in spite of a press release which came out last week.
If implemented in December, the move would leave schools struggling to fill vacancies as applicants spend months waiting for police checks and arranging medicals and travel to embassies. It would also discourage hagwon from getting rid of underperforming teachers. While no one doubts hagwon would boot abusive teachers, those coming in hung over, unprepared and unenthusiastic could be more of a problem. Schools already have a tough time shifting them because their replacement is costly, difficult and time consuming.
Some suspect the extra time and expense of visa application will deter legitimate teachers. I predict a mass exodus of legitimate, qualified, native-speaking ESL Teachers. They will be replaced mostly by highly transient and unskilled backpackers who will work illegally on tourist visas at premium wages, said one teacher, asking not to be named. Mindful of this, the ministry also intends to increase the severity of punishments for those hagwon employing illegal teachers. But that teacher remains unconvinced. Youve got to really want to work in Korea to go through all that mess, he says. Those few teachers who are compliant with these new visa regulations will almost certainly be demanding extraordinarily high wages.

New E2 Visa Guidelines (December 01, 2007)

FROM ESLDAILY.ORG
It's a tough lesson to learn, but if you're going to teach in Korea, read the fine print. Korea's E2 visa regulations have been transient as of late, but one stipulation that has not changed is the fact you must have a degree from an accredited university from Canada, America, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa. A British student studying at the Hangkuk University of Foreign Studies, a prestiguous University in Seoul, recently discovered this hard truth when he applied for an E2 teaching visa just ahead of finishing his English Education degree. Mark Thomas, the British student, recevied the news he had been denied an E2 visa just after Christmas 2007 by the Seoul Immigration Bureau. The Bureau cited that because Thomas had not graduated from a University in a native-English speaking country, he did not meet the requirements of the E2 visa.
For further details go to the blogs that first reported this incident: 1. http://www.rjkoehler.com/2008/01/22/how-****ed-up-is-koreas-english-teaching-racket/ 2. http://eflgeek.com/index.php/eflgeek/comments/english-education-major-denied-visa/
This incident speaks volumes to the dicord between official goverment departments. Korea remains a country where there is an obvious lack of commitment on the part of the government to the quality of its public education system, if a Korean univeristy will train a foreign teacher and then refuse to hire them as one. Although Thomas was eventually denied an E2 visa by the Seoul Immigration Bureau, the Seoul Board of Education had given him a green light on receiving a visa prior to the Bureau's decision. The Board of Education should have been aware of the law before misleading Thomas. Nevertheless, it is still the responsibility of the student or teacher to be aware of all laws before embarking on such an undertaking.

pay - how much

It depends on your experience and education. Most folks can earn about $2k USD per month. But you have to consider the pension and tax deduction. There are a number of schemes out there so pay attention to the actual income.. also, the cost of living in Korea is rising. It isn't cheap like it used to be. Also, some companies will pay your way to korea, some won't. Are you planning on using a recruiter or find a school directly?

Could anyone tell me about how much one could expect to make in Korea, say per month, for how many hours, and what that equals approximately in Canadian or US dollars? How much would the average person save per year after all tax and expenses?

ABOUT YES YOUNGDO
YES Youngdo English School first opened in 1987. Its ongoing efforts to improve English education in Korea resulted in the establishment of Youngdo Education Corporation in 2001. Currently, there are twenty campuses with over 200 Native English speaking teachers situated in Seoul and Busan.
All YES Youngdo English Schools operate under a single owner, rather than as a franchised system, to uphold the quality of its schools. This has enabled Youngdo to become one of the most respected and successful English-based academic corporations in Korea today.
Youngdo encourages an open line of communication between all campuses and its head office to foster a dynamic workplace. Youngdo is constantly looking for the input of its teachers, both to further the curriculum and to enrich their experience in Korea. The head office, which consists of a team of foreign and Korean staff, focuses on issues such as human resources, curriculum development, and training and support for teachers.
YES Youngdo English School puts a great deal of emphasis on the curriculum. The R&D center constantly strives to improve the curriculum, allowing for the growth and development of both teachers and students. Students range from 3rd grade elementary through to high school. All learning aspects are covered through a reading-based communicative teaching method. Phonics, reading comprehension, conversation, grammar, and writing are covered through different materials such as storybooks, leveled grammar, or language arts books. As the students reach the higher levels, American school textbooks in English, Science, Geography, and History are used to advance their communication abilities.
The curriculum is well-organized and structured with plenty of support. Teachers are provided with quizzes for the main reading books, along with teacher's guides, monthly curriculum sheets, and supplementary materials. Teachers have meetings and workshops on a regular basis during work hours to discuss better ways of teaching as well as to encourage professional development. Teachers with experience are also encouraged to display their individual flair and ability in the classroom.
As well as being a dynamic and ever-expanding English school, YES Youngdo Education Corporation takes part in a multitude of other educational activities. What is Happening on March 15, 2008?
 silvia Posts 2

Starting March 15th, the Korean immigration office is implementing more restrictive visa regulations on FTs-
All FTs that were on a teaching visa (E2 visa) that are either renewing or extending and all getting them for the first time will have to submit a police check, medical exam and in some cases will have to go to the local consulate for an interview.
What usually took 2 weeks to process will now take much longer. Will these new changes affect your decision to stay in Korea?

NOVA JAPAN HAS COLLAPSED

"Nova Corporation, Japan’s largest provider of private English and other foreign language education, has collapsed. The company, which at its height comprised over 900 schools, employed over 4,000 foreign teachers and 2,000 Japanese staff, and provided lessons to nearly 500,000 students, closed its doors on October 27, leaving its foreign language instructors stranded halfway around the world from homes as far away as Europe and America. Most of these workers are broke and many have already been evicted from their apartments"

Visa Runs to Tokyo, Korean Visa

The visa run in Tokyo will be expensive.. There is also an alternative. Qindao, China has a Korean consulate.
The Consulate is separate from the Korean Embassy. If you nee a map, the guards at the Korean Embassy will give you one if you ask nicely.
DIRECTIONS Azabu-Juban Station, on the Oedo Line. Take exit #7 Cross the street at the crosswalk immediately outside the exit. Take the alley on your left, parallel to the crosswalk and follow it till it ends. Turn left, go straight down, on the right side to the 6-8 lane road. Cross that road and take a right onto the opposite sidewalk; Walk about 200m and you will find the Korean consulate on your left.
It's on the 2nd floor.
--They take passports from 9a.m.-12 noon. --They deliver the visas 2 days later, from 13:30-16:00 .
If you have your plane ticket for early departure on that day, photocopy the ticket, it will cost 10Y, give it to the visa officer, and they'll get you your passport by 9 a.m. (Two days Later)
Consulate Fee --5400Y You have to get a ticket from a machine next to the Information desk. Machine does not take 5000 or 10000 yen bills or the new 1000Y bills.
Bring a photo. Don't lose your receipt!!!
